How to watch

This lecture starts on 19 April at 5:21pm (UK).

Summary

Used as a royal hunting lodge from the 13th century, the Château de Fontainebleau was inhabited and embellished by every French monarch from Francis I in the early 16th century to Napoleon III in the mid-19th century. Every style from neoclassicism to the Renaissance is represented, making the chateau far more historically, architecturally, and aesthetically interesting than the more famous and visited chateau of Versailles.
