Hagai M. Segal
Long Reach of the Law? Trump, Colombia, Nigeria and the ‘Rule Based Order’

Monday 10.11.2025

How to watch

This lecture starts on 10 November at 7:00pm (UK).

Summary

Please note this session will only be available to watch live.

Since September, President Trump has repeatedly authorised the US military to strike alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean, resulting in Colombia and Venezuela accusing him of “fabricating a war.” And now he is threatening military action on Nigeria! What is behind these moves, and how do we reconcile Trump pushing for a Nobel Peace Prize with his rhetoric of sending in troops “guns-a-blazing”? Is Trump securing US security, or is this an example of a president seeking to ignore the existing international rules of conduct?
