How to watch

This lecture starts on 15 September at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

The French Revolution had consequences in South America as well as in Europe. Napoleon’s defeat of Spain and Portugal provided the opportunity for South America to break free from colonial rule. The first two countries to do so were Argentina and Paraguay in 1811, the last was the Brazilian declaration of independence in 1822.
