Film Noir or/ou Film Noir: Cherchez la Différence… et la Femme
How to watch
Summary
Noir films were produced in many countries, but American and French directors, many of whom were Jewish, were the most prolific. This presentation will examine the styles, themes, and typical characters defining noir films, and look at the influences, similarities, and differences between French and American noir, political, and neo-noir films. It will address sensitive topics such as racism within the police and the role and treatment of women. Was the scheming femme fatale an American creation? Why were women treated contemptuously in post-Liberation France? What do the different ways in which censorship operated tell us about both countries?
