Trudy Gold
Great Jewish Cities: Odessa

Thursday 13.02.2025

Summary

By 1900 Jews made up nearly a third of the population of Odessa, despite direction from rabbis to not go within 10 versts of this storied port because the fires of Hell burned there. This exciting seaport on the edge of the Pale of Settlement was a centre of Haskalah Zionism, Jewish literature, theatre, and of course music, yet this cosmopolitan centre had its dark underbelly of pogroms, poverty, prostitution, and gangsters. Sure to be a memorable lecture by Trudy.
